Extrusion produces continuous cross-sections—pipes, bars, channels, strips—by pushing melted resin through a die. Injection molding produces discrete parts in a closed mold. Extrusion is far more efficient for long runs of consistent cross-sectional shapes that would be very expensive to injection mold.
Standard extrusion tolerances on cross-sectional dimensions are typically ±0.1–0.3 mm depending on the profile size and material. Tighter tolerances require more controlled die design and downstream sizing equipment. Assembly-fit profiles should have tolerance requirements specified during die development.
Straightness is controlled by pulling speed, haul-off tension, cooling rate, and material formulation. Semi-crystalline materials like HDPE or PP are more prone to warpage from differential cooling. Proper sizing tanks, controlled water temperature, and uniform haul-off speed minimize bow and curvature.
Yes. Profiles are cut on-line using flying-knife or servo saw systems synchronized to haul-off speed. Cut length tolerance is typically ±1 mm or better for standard profiles. Cut length, squareness, and whether cut surfaces need secondary machining should be defined in the specification.
Extrusion involves die cost and setup time, so short trial runs are less economical than sustained production. As a general guide, 500–1,000 meters or more makes the tooling and setup cost practical. We can discuss specific project economics based on your cross-section and material.
