Discuss This PartCapability decision data
Technical fit for CNC plastic milling
Use this capability summary to decide whether the process fits the part before discussing tooling, lead time or price.
- Best fit
- Prismatic plastic components with pockets, slots, flat faces, hole patterns and controlled datums.
- Design focus
- Tool access, internal radii, wall stiffness, workholding, burr direction and datum strategy should be visible in the drawing.
- Material direction
- Heat generation, chip formation, moisture and residual stress vary by plastic stock grade.
- Volume and cost logic
- Setup count, stock size, toolpaths, material removal and inspection drive low-to-medium-volume cost.
- Inspection focus
- Inspect datums, flatness, position, pocket size, edge condition, surface and movement after unclamping.
- Compare against
- Compare with turning for rotational parts, 3D printing for fast complex prototypes and molding for repeat volume.
Product Description
Our CNC plastic milling service produces custom machined plastic parts with accurate features, clean edges and stable dimensions for prototypes, fixtures and production components.
CNC milling is suitable for engineering plastics that need pockets, slots, holes, flat surfaces, contours and complex structural details without opening a mold.
Manufacturing Capabilities
| Process | 3-axis and multi-operation CNC plastic milling |
| Materials | POM, PEEK, PTFE, nylon, ABS, PVC, PP, PE, UHMW-PE, acrylic and PC |
| Part types | Fixtures, plates, brackets, covers, insulation parts, housings and precision plastic blocks |
| Files | STEP, STP, IGS, X_T, DWG and PDF drawings |
Materials and Options
- POM/Delrin for stable mechanical components.
- PEEK for high-temperature and high-performance applications.
- PTFE for low-friction and chemical-resistant parts.
- Acrylic and PC for transparent covers and panels.
- Nylon and UHMW-PE for wear-resistant industrial parts.
Typical Applications
CNC milled plastic parts are used for jigs, fixtures, electronic insulation parts, machine guards, guide rails, medical device prototypes, test components and custom industrial assemblies.
Example Project
A customer required a POM fixture plate with multiple slots, countersunk holes and tight assembly alignment. We selected a stable clamping method, milled the datum surfaces first, checked hole positions and finished the part with deburring.
Quality Control
- Drawing and requirement review before production.
- First article inspection before batch work.
- Dimensional checks for critical features and assembly areas.
- Appearance inspection for surface defects, color variation and processing marks.
- Protective packaging and final confirmation before shipment.
What We Need for a Quote
Please send 3D files, 2D drawings, material requirements, quantity, target tolerance, surface finish, color, application environment and any inspection standard. If the design is still early, we can help compare process options before production.
FAQ
Which plastics are best for CNC milling?
POM, PEEK, nylon, PTFE, acrylic, PC and UHMW-PE are common choices. The best option depends on strength, heat, friction, chemical exposure and cost.
Can you machine transparent plastic?
Yes. Acrylic and polycarbonate can be milled, drilled and polished depending on the design and surface requirement.
Is CNC milling better than injection molding?
For prototypes and low-volume custom parts, CNC milling is often faster because no mold is required. For high-volume production, injection molding may be more economical.
