PTFE, PEEK, POM (acetal), nylon (PA6, PA66), UHMW-PE, HDPE, polycarbonate, and phenolic laminates are the most frequently turned materials. Each has different machinability characteristics affecting tool choice, speeds, feeds, and coolant strategy.
Many engineering plastics have thermal expansion coefficients 5–10 times higher than steel, meaning dimensional measurements taken immediately after cutting may change as the part returns to ambient temperature. We allow parts to stabilize before final measurement and specify tolerances in relation to the measurement temperature for high-precision applications.
Yes. Live tooling turret centers allow turning of OD, boring of ID, drilling, and end-facing in a single chucking, which minimizes runout error between features. For high-precision concentric geometry, single-setup processing is preferable to splitting operations between machines.
CNC turning can achieve Ra 0.4–1.6 µm as a turned finish on stable materials like POM or PEEK. Softer materials like UHMW or PTFE may exhibit slight tool marks that require secondary polishing for optical or sealing surface requirements.
Thin-wall turning in plastics is limited by deflection under cutting forces and fixture clamping pressure. Walls under 1.5–2 mm in most plastics require specialized fixturing and reduced cutting forces. Very thin sections are sometimes better produced by starting with extruded tube stock rather than bar turning.
