Technical fit for CNC plastic drilling and reaming
Use this capability summary to decide whether the process fits the part before discussing tooling, lead time or price.
- Best fit
- Machined plastic parts that need controlled hole position, diameter, depth, finish or alignment.
- Design focus
- Hole depth-to-diameter ratio, breakthrough, edge distance, chip evacuation, coolant compatibility and clamping matter.
- Material direction
- Soft, brittle, filled and high-expansion plastics require different drill geometry, speed and support.
- Volume and cost logic
- Standard tooling keeps simple holes efficient; deep, tiny, intersecting or reamed holes add setup and cycle time.
- Inspection focus
- Measure diameter, position, cylindricity, depth, burrs, cracking, melt marks and alignment to mating features.
- Compare against
- Compare drilled holes with molded cores, boring or threaded inserts according to tolerance, volume and function.
Product Description
Our CNC Plastic Drilling and Reaming Services provide high-precision hole-making solutions for a wide range of custom plastic components. Using advanced CNC machining equipment, we ensure accurate hole positioning, smooth inner wall finishes, and strict dimensional control for industrial-grade plastic parts.
Drilling is used to create precise holes in plastic materials, while reaming is a finishing process that improves hole accuracy and surface quality. Combined, these processes are essential for manufacturing high-performance plastic parts that require tight tolerances, smooth assembly fit, and reliable mechanical performance.
We specialize in machining various engineering plastics, including:
- POM (Acetal / Delrin)
- Nylon (PA)
- PTFE (Teflon)
- ABS
- PVC
- PP
- PE
- UHMW-PE

FAQ: CNC Plastic Drilling & Reaming Services
Why does drilling plastic require different drill geometry than metal drilling?
Standard metal drills have cutting angles designed to shear metal chips. In plastics, these angles often produce heat, melting, or stringy chips that clog the flutes. Drills for plastics typically use higher rake angles, polished flutes, and pointed tip geometry to produce clean shear rather than deformation.
When is reaming required after drilling in plastic parts?
Reaming is required when the hole diameter must be held to tighter tolerance than drilling alone can achieve, or when bore finish must accommodate a bearing, pin, or press-fit component. Reaming after drilling brings the hole to tolerance and improves roundness and surface finish for functional interfaces.
Can CNC drilling hold true position tolerance for pattern holes in plastic?
Yes. CNC drilling with a qualified reference datum can hold true position tolerances of ±0.05 mm or better on hole patterns, which meets most assembly requirements. Very tight true position (under ±0.02 mm) requires jig boring or single-point boring rather than drilling.
How is chip evacuation managed when drilling deep holes in plastic?
Deep hole drilling (depth-to-diameter ratio above 4:1) in plastics requires peck drilling (repeated retraction to clear chips), polished or parabolic-flute drills, and sometimes air blast to assist chip extraction. Melted or fused chips stuck in the hole affect hole finish and diameter.
What hole diameter range is practical for CNC plastic drilling?
We routinely drill holes from 0.8 mm to over 80 mm in diameter. Very small holes below 1 mm require specialized micro-drills and reduced feed rates to avoid breakage. Very large holes above 40 mm are often produced by boring or interpolated circular milling for better dimensional control.
