Technical fit for Plastic surface finishing and assembly
Use this capability summary to decide whether the process fits the part before discussing tooling, lead time or price.
- Best fit
- Projects that combine molded or machined parts with deburring, texture, printing, coating, hardware and final assembly.
- Design focus
- Cosmetic zones, masking, handling datums, material compatibility, joint access and acceptance samples should be defined.
- Material direction
- Surface energy, solvent sensitivity, heat and additives influence coating, printing, adhesive and welding choices.
- Volume and cost logic
- Every manual finish and assembly step adds handling; limiting work to functional and visible areas controls cost.
- Inspection focus
- Inspect color and texture consistency, adhesion, scratches, alignment, torque, fit and completed assembly function.
- Compare against
- Compare integrated molding features with separate finishing and assembly when evaluating tooling versus labor.

FAQ: Plastic Surface Finishing & Assembly Services
What surface finishing options are available for plastic parts?
We offer painting, pad printing, silk screening, laser engraving, UV coating, clear coating, electroplating (on plateable resins like ABS), and flame or plasma surface activation. The right finishing sequence depends on the base resin, desired appearance, durability requirements, and whether the part must meet any chemical resistance or adhesion standard.
Why do some plastics require surface activation before painting or bonding?
Polyolefins (PP, PE) have very low surface energy, which causes paint or adhesive to bead and fail to wet the surface. Flame treatment, plasma treatment, or chemical priming oxidizes the surface and raises surface energy, improving adhesion of primers, inks, and adhesives. Without activation, paint adhesion on these materials will fail in service.
Can you handle assembly of plastic sub-components as a service?
Yes. We perform snap-fit assembly, fastener installation (heat-set inserts, self-tapping screws), adhesive bonding, ultrasonic welding, and packaging. Assembly is performed in conjunction with plastic part production, reducing supplier coordination overhead for the buyer.
What adhesives are used for plastic bonding, and how is adhesive selection made?
Structural acrylic adhesives are used for PC, ABS, and acrylic. Cyanoacrylate (CA) adhesives are used for quick bonds on ABS, PC, and elastomers. Epoxy is used for multi-material and high-load joints. UV-cure adhesives are used for transparent assemblies. Selection is based on the substrate materials, joint geometry, load type, temperature range, and assembly cycle time requirements.
How is the finished assembly checked before shipment?
We perform appearance inspection against an approved golden sample, dimensional check of critical assembly features, functional testing (where applicable), and leak testing for sealed enclosures. Test criteria and acceptance standards are defined in the quality plan before production.
