Technical fit for Plastic grinding and polishing
Use this capability summary to decide whether the process fits the part before discussing tooling, lead time or price.
- Best fit
- Cut or machined plastic parts that need edge refinement, controlled surface texture or improved clarity.
- Design focus
- Material sensitivity, heat generation, edge geometry, target roughness and optical expectations set the finishing route.
- Material direction
- Acrylic, polycarbonate and engineering plastics need different abrasive, buffing or vapor-compatible approaches.
- Volume and cost logic
- Manual finishing adds labor; specifying only functional surfaces prevents unnecessary cost.
- Inspection focus
- Inspect haze, scratches, waviness, heat damage, dimensional loss, edge condition and visual consistency.
- Compare against
- Compare mechanical polishing with flame, vapor or as-machined finishes after checking material compatibility.
Product Description
Our Plastic Grinding and Polishing Services provide high-quality surface finishing solutions for custom plastic components used in industrial, automotive, electronics, medical, and consumer applications. Using advanced polishing equipment and professional finishing techniques, we improve the appearance, smoothness, transparency, and dimensional precision of plastic parts.
Plastic grinding is a precision surface treatment process used to remove machining marks, burrs, uneven surfaces, and minor imperfections. Plastic polishing further enhances the surface finish, creating a smooth, glossy, or transparent appearance depending on product requirements.
These finishing processes are widely applied to engineering plastics and transparent materials, helping improve both functional performance and product aesthetics.
We support processing for a wide range of plastic materials, including:
- Acrylic (PMMA)
- PC (Polycarbonate)
- ABS
- POM (Acetal / Delrin)
- Nylon (PA)
- PVC
- PTFE (Teflon)
- PE
- PP
- PEEK
Our plastic grinding and polishing services are suitable for:
- Transparent plastic covers
- Electronic housings
- Medical device components

FAQ: Plastic Grinding & Polishing Services
What surface finishes are achievable by plastic grinding and polishing?
Depending on abrasive sequence and final polishing media, we can produce surfaces from Ra 0.1 µm (near-optical) down to less than 0.05 µm for optical-grade requirements. Lens-quality surfaces require diamond polishing paste and controlled polishing pressure. Industrial sealing surfaces typically require Ra 0.4–0.8 µm.
Which plastics respond well to grinding and polishing?
Acrylic (PMMA), polycarbonate, PEEK, POM, and nylon polish to high quality. PTFE and UHMW-PE are more difficult to polish because their low surface energy causes abrasive media to slide rather than cut. Rubber-toughened materials like ABS are prone to microscopic tearing during polishing, which limits the final achievable finish.
Can grinding remove tooling marks or surface defects from injection molded parts?
Yes. Surface grinding can remove sink marks, gate vestige, parting line flash, and machining marks from flat or curved surfaces. The amount of material removal must stay within the dimensional tolerance of the part. Grinding is specified as a secondary operation when the molded surface finish does not meet functional or cosmetic requirements.
What is the process for achieving an optically clear surface on polycarbonate or acrylic parts?
The process follows progressive abrasive stages: rough grinding (if needed), sequential sanding through 400–1200 grit, then polishing with aluminum oxide, cerium oxide, or diamond compound. Final clarity depends on the polymer clarity grade and the completeness of each abrasive stage.
Can polished plastic surfaces be protected from re-scratching during handling?
Yes. We apply protective film during post-polish handling and packaging. Hardcoating (UV-cured or thermal coating) can be applied to polished acrylic or PC surfaces to improve scratch resistance in service. Hardcoat selection depends on the chemical environment and whether optical transparency is required.
