What is the difference between cut tapping and form tapping for plastic threads?
Cut tapping removes material to form thread grooves, producing chips that must be cleared. Form (roll) tapping displaces material rather than cutting it, which increases thread root density and creates stronger threads without chips. Form tapping is preferred for ductile plastics (nylon, PC, HDPE) where the stronger thread justifies additional setup attention.
What thread engagement length is needed for reliable plastic threads?
Plastic threads typically require 2–3 times the fastener diameter in engagement length to achieve screw pull-out strength equivalent to metal threaded joints. Standard metal bolt engagement guidelines (1× diameter) are insufficient for plastic. For critical fastened joints, we recommend threaded brass inserts instead of tapping directly into plastic.
Which plastics hold threads well, and which are problematic?
POM, PEEK, nylon (filled grades), and HDPE hold tapped threads well. PTFE and UHMW-PE are too soft and prone to thread stripping under load; these materials almost always require metal inserts. Brittle thermosets such as phenolic can crack at the root of tapped threads if the drill hole is not correctly sized.
What thread standards can you produce?
We produce threads to ISO Metric (M2 through M30 and larger), UNC, UNF, BSPP, BSPT, NPT, and custom thread forms on request. The tapping operation uses calibrated go/no-go gauges to verify thread fit at first article and during production sampling.
When should threaded brass inserts be used instead of tapping plastic directly?
Use threaded inserts when the assembly will be repeatedly assembled and disassembled, when the torque or pull-out load exceeds what a tapped plastic thread can sustain, when the plastic is too soft for reliable direct threading, or when the service environment involves vibration or thermal cycling that would loosen a plastic thread.
