In IBM, the neck and thread are formed by injection molding the preform, not by the blow cycle. This means thread geometry is dimensionally accurate and consistent across every part, which is critical for cap-seal integrity in pharmaceutical and personal care applications.
IBM is most effective for small to medium containers, typically 5 mL to 1 liter. Very large containers are better handled by EBM. IBM excels at producing clear, cosmetically smooth containers for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and premium personal care products.
IBM produces minimal flash compared to EBM. Because the preform is injection molded to near-net shape before blowing, there is no parison pinch-off scrap. This makes IBM more material-efficient for small high-value containers with optical-clarity materials like PET or PC.
IBM can be configured for multi-layer preforms with barrier layers, but it is more complex than co-extrusion blow molding for this purpose. For simple single-material containers with precise necks, IBM is often the most cost-effective process.
IBM tooling requires both a preform injection mold and a blow mold, making it more expensive than single EBM tooling. The advantage is better dimensional control and surface quality. Total tooling cost for IBM is justified when neck precision, cosmetic quality, or material efficiency requirements exceed what EBM can deliver.
